If you have ever wondered what would happen if the camshaft broke in an 10,000hp nitro burning funny car engine, Tim Wilkerson provided the answer at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals on Saturday and the results were complete catastrophe. When the cam snapped, the engine hung TWO intake valves open and the engine suffered a violent engine explosion blowing a giant chunk out of the body off of the car. Wilkerson’s body had been previously modified with side burst panels to allow the pressure from an explosion to an escape without causing the body to become a physical hinderance to the driver.

Said burst panels had been modified and changed since first being seen in 2013 and the results of the changes were visible in the Wilkerson explosion on Saturday. When the engine blew up, a huge middle section of the body on the right hand side of the car was blown to bits but the area where Wilkerson sits was intact. In fact, it was so intact that Wilkerson climbed out of the car in the typical fashion that he normally would have prior to the explosion.

While angry that the incident and damage occurred, Wilkerson was able to run the next qualifying session with a new body on his car and he’ll be racing on Sunday for the Wally.
