This 1950 Plymouth Suburban Is Everything A Modern Crossover Utility Vehicle Isn’t

This 1950 Plymouth Suburban Is Everything A Modern Crossover Utility Vehicle Isn’t

We live in a world where car companies keep announcing that they are not going to make cars anymore, people are buying so-called “cross-overs” as fast as people can manufacture them, and by and large they are doing it for reasons even they do not understand. A CUV does not accelerate, turn, or brake better than a car. In many respects they are not as comfortable as a car, and they also tend to have less usable cargo space than a car (when there are four passengers in it). So what the hell, right? This all becomes more painfully obvious when we look at a car like this 1950 Plymouth Suburban. This thing is not a crossover, it is a smartly built car that is full of utility which probably gets as good or better mileage than your CUV does. Seriously.

Rant about CUVs aside, this thing is awesome and one of the reasons that it is so cool is the fact that there are very few of these things running around. We see the more well know Chevrolet Suburban running around but that’s a big truck which has its own legacy. This thing is a station wagon on some steroids. A classic “high roof” design, the kind that was revived for the PT Cruiser and Chevy HHR, this Suburban is 100% stock.

There’s a (roughly) 100hp flathead inline six for power, a manually shifted (on the tree) transmission, and not a whole lot else in terms of options. Large but not massive, you could load the family and your stuff in this thing and cruise until your heart was content. Now, slinging a nice junkyard take out modern hemi and overdrive transmission would make it more speedy but this thing is ready to go right now.

The color, the body matched steel wheels, and that cool semi-boxy roofline make this a winner.

eBay: This 1950 Plymouth Suburban is absolutely perfect

This one I think is restored, Hemmings did an article on it early last year in there Classic Magazine. I put in a offer of $25,000 on this one through e bay to Hendricks but not enough. It was up for auction Yesterday at GAA Classic Cars Auction, Greensboro, NC.. High bid was $27,000 again Not Enough. I have been looking for another one since I bought my \’50 Plymouth Suburban, I Just LoveThem….
