Dare To Be Different: This 1965 Mercury Montclair Marauder Has A 427, A 4-speed, and 1960s Square Styling

This is one of those cars you simply do not see everyday. You are looking at a 1965 Mercury Montclair Marauder which is packing a dual quad topped 427ci FE engine under the hood and a four speed stick between the seats. It is also packing the styling that proves Ford was really trying to make Mercury into a baby Lincoln division because the nose of this thing still has us doing double takes and thinking it is a period Lincoln. The car is not original the sense that it apparently did not leave the factory with the 427 in it. That was an optional engine, however. The dual quads? Those were totally not an optional piece of equipment but we totally approve of their existence on this car.

The hardtop look, this really light blue paint, and the matching blue interior is awesome and we’re just kind of drooling over this car. Why? When is the last time you have seen one? We didn’t even know that these cars existed until we found the ad. To say that we have been fans of the Mercury Marauder nameplate, especially the early ones that were battle tested in stock car racing would be an understatement but we just didn’t know that they kept it on as a trim level after the dedicated models were taken out of the lineup.

Someone with good taste and a penchant or fun bought this car new. The number of these sold with a four speed has to be very, very low. While this is not a “collector” car, it still adds to the value in our eyes. The asking price in the upper $20k range? We don’t think that is too far out of line. It appeals to a narrow window of enthusiast looking for a larger car with a big block and a four speed. Yes, it appeals to us!

I built a plastic Revel model of this very car, white on white. I don\’t know that it defined the size of the V8 that was in the model. I loved the styling on that model though I am not a great Mercury fan and I have never actually seen one in person. I still really like that styling!

I’m old enough to be familiar with these cars. In 65, there were 3 different versions of the 390 FE in full sized cars. Top dog was the 390 Interceptor at 330 hp. 4 speeds were available. A 427 would literally bolt in place of a 390.

This car is a Monterey, the name is clearly on the quarter panel in the picture. Montclair’s came in 66. Regardless, this is a cool car and not one you see often.

Wow! I actually owed a 1964 parklane marauder with a factory dual quad 427. Cool car. 2 door fastback. Blue with white interior. Buckets console 4 speed and factory 4.11 gears. My mom loved riding in the”mega merc”.
