This 1966 El Camino Promotional Video Is Crazed 60s Chevy Propaganda At Its Finest

There’s nothing like some wacky 1960s manufacturer propaganda to get our blood going on a Friday. In this video we see a big block 1966 El Camino compared to a 289 powered Ranchero, then bragged on about being able to level Mustangs in performance. Continuing on down the line there are van and truck comparisons that will make you smile. We use the word “tests” loosely because of the fact that this was a GM made film and there was no way any of their stuff was going to “lose” these feats of strength.

The fine levels of campiness really define these films. The wild west opening is so bad that you simple have to laugh. Between the guy with the comically humongous pistol and the horrid drawl that they both have, it’s not exactly Oscar worthy performances in any respect.

Weirdly the two vehicles we want the most are the Chevy and Ford vans that show up in the second segment of the film. The Dodge pulling a wheelie with a pallet of lime in the back is perfection on all levels. We’d love a cool forward control van. The weird departure angle test was clearly drawn up by a guy who was capable of using a ruler.

Lastly the trucks with the campers in the back are just awesome. A clean sweet by Chevrolet in their own propaganda. Who saw that coming?

Here we get a peek at the fantasy world that resides inside the minds of the Chevy boys. This explains a lot!

Yes, when a manufacturer controls the comparison it is always favorable to their product. Case in point. While I’m not a particular fan of Ford’s aluminum pick up box the comparison dropping a tool box into one between a Ford & Chevy was staged to favor Chevrolet. I only say that because I saw a video that analyzed it in slow motion proving the dropped tool boxes were not the same. Also I believe the rocks dropped into the two boxes was rigged as well. Poetic license, I guess, and I don’t care. Just like political ads, I don’t pay any attention to them but make up my mind based on my own opinions. So drive what you want, I do. But the bottom line is Ford F Series is USA1 since 1973.
