The 2020 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S Are German Strongmen Who Continue To Adapt To The Times

The 2020 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S Are German Strongmen Who Continue To Adapt To The Times

(Words by Tom Lohnes – Photos by the Manufacturer) –The Porsche 911 Turbo is an icon of the 80’s. Its turbocharged flat six-cylinder was a very potent engine at the time of its release, and the iconic 930 Turbo was kind of a deathtrap due to the horsepower it made and famously violent snap oversteer. The Turbo nameplate has been running ever since. The latest turbo just dropped, and it’s in the same family as its forefathers, minus some death trappiness. With all of the power and all-wheel-drive glory of the past this thing is a beast

Porsche has two Turbo models, the “normal” Turbo and the Turbo S. The turbo is plenty fast with its 600 horsepower but if you need more than that you’re in luck. The latest iteration of the Turbo S, coming from the new for 2020 992 generation, cranks out 640 horsepower and 513 lb-ft of torque.

That power combined with the lightning quick PDK transmission and the AWD, push the hefty 3,527-pound Porsche to 60 MPH in a mind-boggling 2.6 seconds. This may not be entirely true though as the last Turbo S did 60 in 2.5 seconds with only 580 horsepower. So, expect the Turbo S to rocket itself to 60 in around 2.3-2.4. As the tradition goes, the 992 Turbo looks basically the same as the 991.1 and 991.2 generations of 911. You can tell the Turbo apart from the normal Carrera models from the giant intakes on either side of the turbo models, feeding the intercoolers for both turbos on the 3.8 liter flat-6.

In conclusion, the Porsche 911 Turbo S and it’s convertible counterpart should be great vehicles that continue on the tradition of perhaps the most vaunted line of sports cars in automotive history. They perform great not only in a straight line, but in the corners as well. Expect the Turbo S variant to start selling near July and start around $205,000

Tom Lohnes all grow\’d up. Good start. FYI the base 992 is also turbo now, but it is not labeled so. It drives absolutely stunningly and is incredibly quick. Keep writing Tom!
