The New Crop Of McLarens Are In And There’s No Better Pound For Pound Performance Car On The Planet

The New Crop Of McLarens Are In And There’s No Better Pound For Pound Performance Car On The Planet

(Words by Tom Lohnes – Photos by the manufacturer) – Think back 10 years. You probably had no clue what a McLaren was. You probably remember their racecars and the iconic F1, but have you heard of the Longtail models?

The McLaren F1 was a fantastic car as well as a modern automotive icon but the F1 GT is where it all started to become really entertaining. Nicknamed the “Longtail”, due to the 6 inches in length added to the rear end, this package was available on the F1 GT and GTR variants, neither of which are street legal. Fast forward 20 years and the longtail name has been revived. This time the cars were no longer extended to improve performance, but the revived model, labeled the 675LT, was a very improved version of their already groundbreaking 650S supercar. This car got 25 more horsepower, it lost 50 pounds, and the tires were extremely beefed compared to the standard car. Then Mclaren brought along the 600LT, a muscled up version of their entry-level supercar, and now the 765LT, the most groundbreaking Mclaren to date.

Now, the 720S is already the most cutting edge mass-produced car made today and the best value for performance right now. This car produces 710 horsepower already and the 765LT just increases that number even more. Starting at $375,000, the car produces 754 horsepower and 559 lb-ft of torque. That is very impressive but the really insane part about this car is the computer programming. McLaren has always been great with a laptop. All of their cars are rear wheel drive but launch like they are not. Mclaren claimed 2.9 seconds to 60 on the 720S, but tests have come to as low as 2.5, so expect similar performance in the 765LT. The LT has very interesting carbon fiber seats with no real cushions, just pads where you tend to sit. The seats are fixed, but if you’re a little bit larger, they do offer a wider fitting version. The car is available with a very large carbon fiber roof scoop that is functional and makes a whooshing sound through the cabin.

In conclusion, this car is incredible. For value, you can’t beat this car for $375,000. It is a truckload of money, but the Bugatti Veyron, a car with very similar Straight-Line performance, costs about $900,000 for a first generation model, and close to $3,000,000 for a newer one.

The C5 through C7 Corvettes have been the best bang-for-buck for many years. The C8 is a european sellout, but still represents a dollar-for-dollar coup over anything made across the oceans in either direction. On a world stage against comparable and perceived greater offerings it also provides the lowest maintenance costs which offers the greatest value in ownership.

I wonder what the repo rate on corvettes over the past 20 years looks like compared the the repo rate on ‘exotics’…
