In news that points to just how deeply the Coronavirus has disrupted life in America, all of the domestic auto manufacturing plants in the country have been closed. Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors, basically all of the UAW affiliated plants in the USA have ceased operations as of Wednesday. BMW and Tesla are continuing to operate their plants with precautions being taken to best guard workers against transmitting or getting the virus at work.
As demand has cratered due to the virus causing quarantines and employment disruptions for a massive number of people, this move may have a level of business shrewdness involved as much as it has employee safety involved. With no demand, running the plants and creating a massive backlog of cars that are not going to sell would be financially crippling to the companies involved. What brought on this closure?
A couple of significant things brought this to bear. Earlier this week the UAW said that they wanted the plants closed. Honda, a non-unionized employer decided to close their plants for about a week because of a lack of demand. Shortly after a Ford plant employee was tested and found to have Coronavirus.
Here’s a quote from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
United Auto Workers (UAW) union President Rory Gamble, who had previously called on the automakers to close their U.S. plants, in a Wednesday statement called the shutdowns “the prudent thing to do.”
This is a massive story and we’re going to follow it closely. Read the full story from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch below!
