BangShift Speed Records: A Brief History Of Plymouth Duster Jingles Past and Past-er

(By Eric Rood) – Plymouth used the Duster moniker not once but twice in the space of a couple decades and managed to churn out some quality of-their-time jingles for the respective versions. Early Dusters were Chrysler A-Body coupes, essentially the two-door version of the Valiant. The 1970s found Plymouth tacking adjectives onto the badging to make half-baked editions of the car. Among those was the Space Duster with a fold-down rear seat and to drive home the name’s cargo capacity selling point, Plymouth’s ad wizards cooked up a ‘70s trucker country ode to its crank sunroof and fully carpeted trunk.

The introduction of the miserly Volare knocked the Duster from Plymouth’s model lineup, but the name reappeared a decade later as the “performance” trim of the K-based Plymouth Sundance. The ‘80s Duster got some bitchin’ graphics and the Mitsubishi 3.0-liter V6 with a restamped “Chrysler” air intake. More importantly, Plymouth’s ad wizards again gave a horrifying MTV-style ad that unwillingly will sear its peppy Cyndi Lauper-wannabe chorus into your brain (“In my Duster / My Duster / My Puh-ly-mouth Duster-erer / I’m leaving it all behind”). Even more of its time: The entire commercial set is clearly covered entirely in cocaine.
