Can-Am Lives: The Unlimited Racing Championship Has The Right Look, Injected Big Blocks, And The Right Venues To Make A Huge Splash

Can-Am Lives: The Unlimited Racing Championship Has The Right Look, Injected Big Blocks, And The Right Venues To Make A Huge Splash

Excuse us as we freak out. CAN AM LIVES! We’re not kidding, the open cockpit, insanely fast, injected big block era of Can Am racing that we so loving remember here at BangShift is back and it is back with a vengeance due to an organization called the Unlimited Racing Championship. These cars are essentially spec style racers, which you can cry about if you want but if you want to cry about cars that look the part, are powered by 700hp big blocks, and will put on a blindingly fast show at any race track they appear at, feel free. We won’t be joining that pity party because we think that this series is just what the doctor ordered. Proving that it is far more than vaporware, the Unlimited Racing Championship has been selected as a support series at four events throughout the Pirelli World Challenge series season. If you are hankering for some of this big block road racing goodness in your life you need to see them at the Circuit Of The Americas in March, Road America in June, Miller Motorsports Park in August, or Laguna Seca in September. Miss it and you have no one to blame but yourself.

Lest you think that these cars use technology from the 1970s. They don’t. The outward appearance of the cars is damned close to those great days of sideburns and shaggy hair but under their neato skin lies lots of modern technology. The cars were freshly designed front the ground up to be safer, more efficient, and better handling than their forefathers. The engines however echo from the past. 494ci aluminum big block Chevy engine makes the thunder and have stack style EFI on them with the calliope style velocity tubes that we all know and love. The cars can be turned down to under 400hp and wicked up to well to well over 700hp when circumstances dictate. One of the original touches that the cars do retain are the 12-inch steel brakes. That certainly keeps an interesting element of driver talent in the game. Safety improvements include the routing of fluids outside the driver’s compartment. Crush zones, the driver’s feet and legs being positioned behind the front axle, and a true “full containment” style racing seat. Cars run a five speed transmission with a true H-pattern shifter.

You can’t see the single tear of joy heading down our cheek right now but it is there. It is so there. We’re not missing this in 2014 and you shouldn’t either. The Unlimited Racing Championship looks like just what the doctor ordered in the road racing world. 100% BangShift approved!

They have been trying to make this fly for a few years, hope it sticks. For the money it may be easier to get a Porsche, Ferrari, etc that supports customer cars and provides some tech or $ and sponsorship

I saw these cars two years ago at Road America. I missed them on the track and thought they were real Cam-Am cars in the pits. There were only two making exhibition runs. They did start them up for us, big American V-8 howl. Can’t wait to see them on the track this year.

Absolutely my favorite racing when I was a teen and never got to see them race in person, I will not make that mistake twice. Long live this Can-Am series.

Hell Ya!!! This so totally rules. These are the Fuel Alterds of road racing. Get the scaffolding or motor home ready Brian, because you and Chad need to cover one or more of these races live. You guys can get your sponsors to cover multiple cameras can’t you? Maybe, please!?
