When there is nothing but mountains and fire roads around you, and you have one of the most important automotive racing events in your backyard, it’s difficult to not strap on some all-terrains to a hot rod and pretend to be Ari Vantanen or Rod Millen for a day. Pikes Peak might be paved all the way to the top, but that’s just one of many mountains that run through Colorado. If you miss dirt path hill climbs, all you have to do is travel a little bit and you’ll find heaven snaking it’s way up the side of a good-sized hill. This footage is from the Temple Canyon Hill Climb, which is held near Cañon City, Colorado. You can stop in and see the Royal Gorge bridge (and the severe drop down that bridge is spanning) then you can watch as all manner of cars that do dirt work scream up the mountain. We are fond of the stock-car looking machines that show up in this 2011 footage, but check out that mid-1960s Ford that could quite literally be anybody ever who is reading this site! Foot to the floor, ass end swinging around the corner with dirt flying everywhere…that’s the way we like it!
Come on Bryan – I could walk up that hill quicker than this lot!
