Classic YouTube: The Lap 148 Battle During The 2007 Bathurst Race Was One For The Books!

Rain falling on the track in certain areas, many cars on slicks, and everybody wanting to drive the front splitter square up the rear bumper of the guy in front of ’em. It’s Australian Supercar racing at it’s finest. The V8 Supercar Series never lacks for entertainment value when running, but there was something about the 2007 Bathurst 1000 that seemed to be even more jumped-up than normal. One engine failed before the race even began. Two cars caught fire, several crashed out and two Holdens retired with brake issues. Then came the rain about lap 142, which turned the surface treacherous. With a conga line of lead lap cars flowing around the upper portion of Mount Panorama like a river of anger, sooner or later things were going to wind up bad and lap 148 seemed to be the mark. The camera crew is focusing on the battle between Steve Johnson and Jason Bright for second place, but once the cars hit Conrod Straight towards the chase, you’ll see a dust trail on the left side of the track that indicates that Mark Winterbottom’s Ford didn’t quite do so well at the Chase. Cold tires and wet track equated to one wild ride through the gravel trip before he crossed directly in front of Craig Lowndes in a moment that was too close for comfort for both drivers, surely!

  1. Just Gary

IMHO, these cars are what NASCAR race cars *should* be; factory-based platforms with working lights and windshield wipers. 🙂
