Going Fast With Class: This 1964 Buick Wildcat Was No GTO, But It Was No Slouch Either

Going Fast With Class: This 1964 Buick Wildcat Was No GTO, But It Was No Slouch Either

I’ve had an unhealthy, or perhaps healthy fascination with the Buick Wildcat since I first saw one in this exact color roaming the streets of my little Massachusetts town. In fact, the car that we used to see out and about when we were in my dad’s GTO was a dead wringer for this one. It was a 1964 model with the vinyl roof, and the same creamy yellow paint color as the car I found for sale on eBay recently.

The Wildcat was a cool car because it did not really have the panache of a GTO or a Chevelle but it had performance chops enough and style chops enough to hold its own in both regards. The torque making 401ci Nailhead made more than 440 lb-ft at low RPM so while the car was not going to be making big top end moves, it was certainly going to be gutsy enough to leave the hole with anger and with enough gusto to keep the other guys honest.

This car is pristine and it has everything (aside form a four speed) that I’d want to have in a Buick of this era. The nice interior, the full dash, the cool “performance gauge” on the center console, and the right engines as well with its classy twin snorkel air cleaner.

One of my favorite parts of the Wildcat is the fact that the thing still has these tiny little vestiges of the fins that so many Detroit built cars sported in the late 1950s. In the shot of the rear of the car you can see how the quarter panels ride to these little fin shapes, paying homage to the steel beasts that predated this more crisp era of automotive styling.

This car is awesome.

eBay: 1964 Buick Wildcat was no GTO but it sure is cool and would be fun to cruise

A buddy used to tow his ’55 Chevy to Fremont with one of these (light blue Convertible), he always won the tow car races among us (low 14s)

Have always liked these. Mom was looking for a used 2nd car as a 16 year old know everything I decided to help her. She really liked the the pretty Buick she picked out and had me drive it back to the dealer. When I squealed the tires by mistake leaving a stoplight she decided she wanted a 6 cylinder Biscayne instead

My 80 year old grandmother had one of these and she wasn’t afraid to use it. It would bury the speedometer.

My uncle had a either ’65 or ’66 Wildcat coupe, light blue with blue interior. Unfortunately the northeast climate wasn’t kind to the body.

My parents also had a ’65 Wildcat sedan, dark green with painted light green roof. That car was traded for a Buick Opel wagon during the first gas crunch.
