I was watching the drag race on my computer and the NASCAR qualifying races on my living room television last night and I couldn’t have predicted that the NASCAR race would produce one of the coolest single racing moments I have ever seen. There was a mondo wreck at the end of the second “Duel” qualifying race at Daytona. With cars hurtling all over the track, one guy in particular got everyone’s attention. That guy was Clint Bowyer and the feat that had everyone (myself included) freaking out was his Joie Chitwood style barrel roll, which he landed on his wheels, and then DROVE HIS CAR BACK TO HIS PIT STALL. I repeat, at 200 mph, he flew and completely rolled his car in the air, landed on the wheels, and DROVE THE CAR BACK TO HIS PIT STALL.
The exterior footage was so good, I was dying to see in-car and BangShifters responded in droves. About 20 of you sent me the link to the video below which shows Clint Bowyer hanging onto the wheel, looking out the window, and sticking the landing harder than a figure skater. The best part is that there was no Russian judge to deduct points. Instead there was a field of baffled drivers and smiling crew people as Bowyer steered the car home after the wild finish. My guess is that the flying car is done for the weekend, the guys will pull a backup car out to run with as to not risk some sort of high speed failure in the machine that absorbed the landing and kept on rolling, but WOW.
I’ve included the in-car and well as some out of car video to give you the full picture of how awesome this whole scene is. The fact that he held onto the wheel and seemed to actually be figuring out when he’d be able to drive the car again is amazing. You have to struggle to hear it, but he’s off the gas, waiting to see how things shake out. The car is not banging the rev limiter and trying to eat itself up. This is like a scene from the Ricky Bobby movie for Pete’s sake but it really happened. I, along with thousands of other saw it.
