(By Tom Lohnes) – It is a rare thing to find a cheap new performance car and even rarer for them to be actually good. But there are a few exceptions that need a good look, especially on the used market. These cars were once halo cars of the lineup and can now be had for around $50,000. For time’s sake, reliability will not be a factor, just bang-for-your-buck. (When you’re 13 reliability never has to be a factor – ed.)
For our first entry, we have the 2018 BMW M4, coming in at $48,390. The M4 packs a 3.0-liter Twin-Turbo Inline-6 with 425 horsepower, and is available with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The M4 starts at around $80,000 from the factory, so $48,000 isn’t a half-bad deal
If you want something a little slower, but a lot louder than an M4, the Jaguar XKR is your only choice. Starting at over $70,000 from the factory, a very clean XKR can be found for $35,988 on eBay. Powered by a brutal, 5.0-liter supercharged V8 making a brash 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque, the XKR is a lot of fun for the price of a new V6 Camry. The Jag’s only transmission is a ZF 8-speed automatic, but that improves daily driving.
If both the BMW and the Jag are too mainstream for you, treat yourself to a Maserati Granturismo. This Italian beauty started at over $100,000 from the factory and can now be bought for $52,988. Under the hood of this beast lies a naturally aspirated, 4.7-liter V8 that produces a godly engine note, and produces 444hp at the crank. If these European deals don’t interest you much, let’s move stateside and show you a real deal.
That’s right, for $38,000, you can buy yourself a 2015 Chevy Camaro Z/28, a 505 horsepower, LS7 powered, manual-only beast. The Z/28 started at around $70,000 from the factory and can now be in your hands for under 40-large. Some time we live in.
Run Away Screaming (well maybe the Camaro)
Reliability nightmares await
