Audi-Here: The Mighty Audi R8 Supercar Begins Its Swan Song By Leaving Aussie Dealers First

Audi-Here: The Mighty Audi R8 Supercar Begins Its Swan Song By Leaving Aussie Dealers First

(By Tom Lohnes) – The Australian supercar market is a weird place. We’ve seen instances of cars that are projected to sell poorly sell absolutely tiny volume even by the companies’ standards. For instance the new Acura NSX got pulled from the market after selling a grand total of 9 units in its 4-year run down under. The latest victim? The Audi R8.

Since 2007, 681 R8s have been moved to buyers in Australia. That averages a whopping 6 cars sold per year. Wow. The small sales are part of the reason Audi withdrew their halo car prematurely, but there’s also another thing. With Audi starting to separate themselves from internal combustion engines, it is only right for them to start de-ICE-ing themselves by discontinuing their largest engine, the R8’s 5.2L V10. Australia was the R8’s smallest market sales-wise, so Audi is starting there. Expect a discontinuation announcement for the rest of the world soon.

Of all supercars, I am sad to see this thing go. From the prototype appearing with Tony Stark behind the wheel to the new one basically tearing people’s faces off on the launch, the R8 has never really gotten credit where credit is due.

So, if you want a “practical” supercar, you have two options which are both leaving our shores very soon. It’s this or the NSX, pick your poison.

Don’t know who is doing the math’s here, but either the total is wrong or the amount of cars sold yearly is, doesn’t add up otherwise
