The NIO EP9 EV might be a bit of a strange beast to us, mainly because of it’s ability to run tracks fully autonomously, but one thing is for certain: it is fast. How fast is it? It’s good for a Nurburgring lap time of 7:05.12, which slots nicely between the Lamborghini Aventador Superveloce and the Nissan GT-R Nismo. That’s not “for an EV” fast, that’s just flat hauling the mail, period, which a highly-billed, tech-loaded EV claiming 1,341 horsepower and a a simply staggering 4,671 lb-ft of torque damn well better be able to do.
The EP9 is an interesting beast…four electric motors, all that power, one forward gear, and yet it somehow makes a tear around the Green Hell an almost soothing experience. It certainly doesn’t have the violence we’ve come to expect from other manufacturer’s recorded laps. The previous Camaro ZL1’s onboard footage showed a driver who was in a wrestling match with a pissed-off bear on amphetamines. Compared, the EP9’s driver looks as calm as someone watching a nice golf match on television, though that’s partly due to the fact that someone forgot to include any angle of the steering wheel.
It might be the most overachieving golf cart in existence at the moment, and we would love to see this thing rock a standing mile, but is it just us or does this Nurburgring lap not do it for you? Chime in below…
Clever tech – yes.
Fast – yes.
Incredibly boring – yes.
The most unexciting Nurburgring lap in existence that I have ever fast-forwarded though…
