Best of 2016: Onboard Ice Racing From Garfield Lake In Minnesota – Where A 1990s Buick Can Be Competitive!

There has to be some kind of unnerving feeling inside of a driver when pulling a car the size of a 1990s Buick Roadmaster onto a frozen lake. Questions emerge…for most people, those questions would be along the lines of, “Is the ice thick enough?”, or maybe “How fast will this barge sink to the bottom?” or “Do I have the tool to break the glass out in here?” In Minnesota, where the temperature is somewhere between Arctic and “frozen hell” around this time of year, their only concerns involve racing lines and the guy in the Impala who is about to drift into their racing line. While professional ice racing is cool, there are neat little side races like this one on Garfield Lake in Laporte, Minnesota that brings out amateur racers that we like to see. How many racing series allow passengers to record as the radio is playing? Precious few, if any. The vehicle of choice seems to be the GM B-body, though a couple Panther platform cars are there as well. It’s not about power…it’s about balancing a two-ton brick on the ragged edge of traction!
