Retro Video: This Period Look At The Consulier GTP Shows Off How Interesting And Cool These Cars Were

Warren Mosler had a vision, a vision that looked into an automotive future of light, stiff, composite bodied cars that performed seemingly amazing feats of performance with powerful small displacement engines. He saw all this 30 years ago and the major difference between Warren Mosler and everyone else is that he had the brains and the horsepower to see his ideas come to life. His Consulier GTP sports car stands as one of the most interesting, different, and awesome machines of the 1980s. In our eyes it also stands as one of the most successful. The car had a production run of about 100 and while it was an awesome performer on the street, it’s what happened on the race track that really made this thing amazing.

See the Consulier was so good that it started picking off much larger named manufacturers during the 1991 IMSA season. IMSA countered with a 300lb weight penalty for the Consulier GTP and then ended up banning the car outright after the 1991 season. We’re not sure if there is any larger honor in racing than a lead trophy and then the boot. Frustrating and angering but it’s the ultimate, if they can’t beat you scenario.

The GTP weighed just over 2,000lbs in an timeframe when a Corvette was still a 3,100lb car. You can see why the little Turbo II Chrysler engine (and later Turbo III Chrysler engine) did wonders with a good gearbox attached to them.

A composite body, advanced suspension, small punchy engine. Huh. Warren Mosler not only saw the future in the 1980s, he executed it in fine style.

He executed it with fine style? Like getting his 4 year old kid to design the whole car while he was off his face on drugs maybe!
