Money No Object: 1991 Mazda B2600i 4×4 – Clean And Simple, Just How They Should Be

Money No Object: 1991 Mazda B2600i 4×4 – Clean And Simple, Just How They Should Be

Which was more influential in this decision…the lowrider 1989 Mazda B2200 that did family-car duty for a summer, the 1988 Dodge D-50 that I used for work that doubled as my practice vehicle for manual transmission operations, or the black Toyota that Marty McFly pines over in Back To The Future? It’s a trick question, all of them have an influence of my craving of this silver extended-cab Mazda truck. In an age where the typical pickup truck sits somewhere between a medium-duty rig and a 1974 Cadillac, small mini-trucks from the late 1980s and early 1990s actually look pretty damned sensible. Light, fairly thrifty and plenty capable, these little trucks lived hard lives, usually as the cheap work alternative to a bigger, thirstier rig, before being unceremoniously dumped for whatever was cheap and newer.

Mazda had been in the game for years, building not only the B-series but also helping Ford along with the Courier before Ford took that project in-house with the Ranger. After finding success with the U.S. market in 1972, Mazda stepped into their own with the fourth-gen trucks and other than the exception of the short time period between 1986 and 1988 when a Mitsubishi 2.6L four was utilized to give the truck some grunt. By 1989, the B2600i meant that the engine was a Mazda 2.6L fuel injected version that put out even more horsepower. Do keep in mind that this wasn’t a powerful truck…the 2600i was the leader at 121 horsepower and 149 ft/lbs of torque. Also remember that truck’s curb weight was just under 2,800 pounds, so that figure isn’t as bad as it first sounds.

But why pick this particular truck? Why not hold out for anything else? LOOK AT IT. It is spotless, it sits right, the wheels and tires are dead-on…I wouldn’t change a single nut or bolt on this rig. It is perfect as-is. And that’s not something I’ll admit everyday.
