(By Tom Lohnes) – This week has been so far so good on new car releases with the Toyota Venza coming back and the Sienna minivan taking some styling cues from the Supra, but one in particular has caught my eye: The new 911 Targa. The old 991 911 Targa was a fantastic car, and the all-new 992 Targa should be even better.
Now, what is a 911 Targa? Well, it is simply a Porsche 911 with a Targa top like the name states. With the return of the 911 Targa for the 997 generation of 911, the Targa packed a 3.8-liter Flat-6, 350 horsepower, and a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed Tiptronic automatic. With the 991.1 generation, the Targa 4S got an all-new Flat-6, more power, and the lightning quick PDK transmission. For the 991.2 gen, the Targa got a pair of turbochargers, an even better transmission, and a sky-high price tag. With the new-for-2020 992 generation, the Targa 4S has a whopping 444 horsepower, a 3.2-second 0-60 time, and an available 7-speed manual. The new Targa shares no parts with the 991 generation, and has a much-improved interior, AWD system, and basically everything else.
So, how much does all this cost? Well, with the normal RWD 911 Carrera starting at over $95,000, the new AWD Targa 4S costs a lot. By a lot I mean $130,000. Is that worth it?
