The first thing we thought of when we saw the footage of the Touring Car Masters race at Winton Motor Raceway in Australia is, “This is the kind of racing we’d watch on television!”, something that can’t…or even shouldn’t…be said for most types of racing. Why? Easy: look at the cars! What we have here is a hybrid mix of 1960s-1970s iron that would make a gearhead drool…Camaros, Mustangs, and I’m pretty sure I even saw a Javelin mixing it up with the likes of Australian Falcons, Toranas and Valiant Chargers, and even a Porsche. You’d swear that somewhere in this lineup is the soul of Mark Donohue facing off with Sam Posey, Peter Brock and Craig Lowndes all in one shot. If that doesn’t intrigue you, then look at the racing: it’s tight and it’s fast, and these guys are not dainty with these classic cars, and that manifests itself early with a Valiant Pacer ramping off of the front fender of a Torana within the first couple of laps. Purists will cringe and cry foul, that it isn’t the way a classic is meant to be treated. Frankly, we wouldn’t have it any other way…these cars were built from the start to be rough and tumble and seeing them sit is a pity. Hit play below and make sure the volume is way up for this one!
