Crosskart racing is one of those things that we probably should have know about but until a few minutes ago, were blissfully unaware of. They have been racing these little things in countries like Sweden for years and apparently a new series has started up in Finland and that’s where this video comes from. The “Crosskarts” as they are called look like little buggies and are powered by 750cc Suzuki motorcycle engines. According to the brief description on the YouTube video, the karts weigh 312kg which works out to about 690lbs. We are not sure if that is with or without driver, but we’re guessing it is with as these are tube framed and have a lightweight fiberglass body. The karts are two wheel drive, have big coilover shocks on all four corners and use independent suspension front and rear. Think of it as a tiny, one man baja buggy.
We looked for other videos and saw these same style creations racing on asphalt and dirt, but seeing them on the snow and ice is really the coolest. With lots of power and a short wheelbase, they drift through and out of corners really well and equipped with knobby rear tires, they make huge rooster tails of snow and ice as the driver’s lay into the throttle. Like off road go-karts on steroids, they must be a riot to drive. Pay attention to the drivers as they drift the Crosskarts through the corners as the steering inputs are nice and smooth and controlled. It isn’t like throwing a Buick through the woods, these are finesse machines and we want one badly!
This type of racing seems perfect for the USA. Have we missed the boat? Are people doing this here yet and if they aren’t why not?! A series that saw competitors running them on road courses, ovals (dirt or asphalt bullrings), rally style courses through the woods, and even in winter like these guys would be riotous to participate in and since the race car could fit in the back of a van or pickup, it can be done for relatively cheap (we’d imagine), especially if the engines are sealed and the components are mostly spec. Like we said before…WE WANT IN!

Relatively inexpensive …. more fun than you can imagine .. like GoKarts giving you the most racing experience for the dollar … as well as teaching you skills that will directly translate to cars should you chose to move up . Not to mention a great way to get young racers seriously into the game
