Raidillon Corner At Spa Is A Car-Eater. Don’t Believe Us? Check Out These Vids…

When it comes to Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps race course, most of the fame is on the corner known as “Eau Rouge”. This is misleading, because it’s a combination of two corners, Eau Rouge (turn #3, a left kink) and Raidillon (turn #4, an uphill right sweeper with a blind exit point) that combine with the unpredictability of the weather and road conditions to become one of the most feared corners in the racing world. Eau Rouge sets up the driver, but Raidillon is actually the problem point of the section, because there is a lot of weight transfer and suspension loading/unloading happening during the cornering. Eau Rouge and Raidillon are well known for their spectacular wrecks, which may stem from the urge for drivers to hit Eau Rouge flat-out in order to maximize downforce and keep the car pinned to the road. Having the Ardennes Forest nearby creates problems as well, including shadowed areas of roadway that could still be damp or cold. Failure usually leads to the same result: the back end steps out during Raidillon and the impact is gonna hurt. Check out the clips below and see for yourself what happens when skill and luck runs out on the course that at one point in time F1 banned from use:
