The famed “Mitty” vintage race at Road Atlanta draws some of the coolest cars and best drivers from across the country every year. There are tons of classes and lots of living history in both people and mechanical form fill the expansive grounds of Road Atlanta. In this clip, we’re showing you an amazing three way battle for seventh place which took place over the last three laps of racing during one contest. As a road racing announcer for a short time (2.5 seasons) I gained a huge respect for figuring out how to see the whole field, not just the front runners. Yes, the winners and podium finishers get the glory but there is a TON of amazing racing that takes place deeper in the field as racers jockey for the best possible position before crossing under the checkered flag.
So in this clip we see a pair of RSR Porsches and a classic Shelby GT350R Mustang slugging it out for three laps before the close of the race. Making this even more cool is that two of the guys had cameras in their cars. Yes, they happen to be the two Porsche drivers but the action is spectacular. Watching the drivers fight the course and each other from in their cars is cool and the perspective from the racer who is trailing is really interesting. We found ourselves planning which line we were going to take and where the braking points were supposed to be.
In terms of excitement and true slice and dice road racing, this is among the best videos we have seen. There’s some sideways stuff, some close calls, and tons of close racing but there is no trading of paint, no one’s car gets bashed, and we are guessing that these guys were all on about a week long adrenaline high after they got through with this slugfest.
Yes, they are running for seventh, but who the hell cares, right? These guys are wheel to wheel in totally awesome cars and wringing them out as hard as they’ll go. Buckle up and press play!
