Tanner Foust’s New Global RallyCross VW Beetle Makes A Teaser Appearance, Demands To Be Taken Seriously

Tanner Foust, the lovable little imp from Top Gear USA and professional rallycross driver, has ditched his Ford Festiva WRC ride for a Volkswagen Beetle. But don’t be too quick to like up the “chick car” jabs just yet. Sure, VW has been fighting with the Beetle’s image ever since they brought it back in 1997, but this particular Beetle has quite a bit of muscle to back up the act: At least 540hp out of the turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder, a 0-60 time that sits right about two seconds, all-wheel-drive and a very pissed-off demeanor. We can’t do anything about Tanner, though, so hopefully he hits the gym.

Honestly, it’s nice to see some different rides in the GRC stable, as everywhere you looked you saw a Festiva WRC. These little hyperactive rockets are concentrated automotive violence and we’d do anything to have a crack at driving one ourselves. Volkswagen say that the car can be out racing as early as September 19-21 at the Red Bull Global Rallycross.

I actually love it. It’s always good to see more manufactures in WRC. The “real” (air cooled) bug was a successful rally car for a while. This one is so gussied up it reminds me of the AWD Porsches from the 80s
