The Battle For The Grand Championship – A Cool Look At The Cars And Competition At Holley LS Fest 2013

The Battle For The Grand Championship – A Cool Look At The Cars And Competition At Holley LS Fest 2013

Before last summer I had never been to the Holley LS Fest at Beech Bend. I had heard about the event and seen photos and video but for whatever reason, I had never attended. The weekend was a unique one for Chad and I because normally when we’re at an event, we’re running around covering it, or one of us is announcing while the other shoots photos or video. That weekend we were both the announcer du jour. Chad owned the autocross and engine swap challenge and I was living in the tower of the drag strip all weekend calling the straight line action. It was really fun and there were many cool cars on the grounds.

The most serious all-around cars were racing for an award known as the Grand Champion award. This was for the car that competed in all facets of the event and scored the highest. Some of the best drivers and nicest cars in the country were involved in this contest. From Danny Popp in his epic Corvette to Bret Voelkel in the 48 Hour Camaro, Brian Finch in his silver second gen Camaro, Nick Lacata in his 4th Gen known as Black Betty, and a host of dark horse candidates who showed up completely unintimidated with the big names they were racing against. Over the course of the weekend these racers competed in the autocross, laid down drag strip times, competed in a unique 3S challenge, took a country cruise, and were judged in the car show. Obviously in the performance events the low times scored the best and in the judged portions of the contest there were points awarded by said judges. Each car’s strengths and weaknesses were on display for all to see and it was a knockdown, drag out battle.

This video is cool because it follows the ups and downs of the whole weekend. It seems crazy to think that ALL this stuff happened over the course of three days. There were a ton of cars, lots of laps, bunches of heat, and a Grand Champion crowned at the end. Who was it? You’re going to have to watch to find out!

Having been autocrossing since 1981, I enjoy seeing the muscle car guys finally getting this whole turning thing down.
