Road Racing Action Photos: The IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge At VIR – Grand Touring Cars, Sports Cars, More

(Photos by David Whealon) – This weekend the IMSA series completes its season with the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The 10 hour endurance race will determine championships across the multiple classes and disciplines that IMSA encompasses. A few weeks back we were showing you loads of killer David Whealon photos from the event at VIR and one series of images slipped through the cracks on our desk. The Michelin Pilot Series is shown here and it’s one of the neatest mixes of cars you’d ever imagine to find on a road course.

Basically there are two classes on the course here. The big Grand Touring style cars and the smaller machines. While they are all battling each other, the inter-class battles are really fun to pick up in these images. When you see a McLaren on the same course as a Honda, a Mercedes, a Mustang, etc, you know things can get interesting quick.

These races run for a couple of hours and require a driver change so there is an element of pit skill and strategy to go along with the obvious nature of the business which is to run as many laps as you can at the highest possible speed. We may be late on delivering these but they are a nice appetizer for the upcoming road racing feast that’ll be happening in Georgia this weekend!
