The Nicest Surviving 1978 Gremlin GT In The World Is For Sale On eBay – This Kind Of Rules

The Nicest Surviving 1978 Gremlin GT In The World Is For Sale On eBay – This Kind Of Rules

Yes, yes we know. 90hp, 20-second quarter mile times, and plastic everywhere means that we’re talking about a car from the late 1970s but when you remember that the horsepower problem can be fixed and there’s something retro cool about the interior, this thing becomes really, really cool. That’s in our eyes anyway. This is a 100% survivor with original paint, interior, etc, and only 18,000 miles on the odometer. The seller got it from the family that bought it originally and did the right thing. He cleaned the car, put a new set of tires on it, and buffed the thing. The results are impressive as we have ever seen. The little car looks like it did when it rolled off the assembly line!

The real question for us arises when we consider what we’d do with the car after receiving it and cruising it for a couple of weeks. Some suspension work and some wheels and tires would probably be first. Get the stance down a little and then use those wheel wells and fender flares to our advantage. We’d go with an 18″ version of the Magnum 500 style wheels that are on the car. 275-width would be fantastic on all four corners. The thing would look pretty mean down at the ground, especially with those wider tires on it.

Engine? Would you build the six into a turbocharged torquer or would you go for an AMC small block in there? Part of us wants to keep the six and turbocharge the thing. Horsepower in the 350-400 range would not be impossible and that would give the little car plenty of snot. A V8 would be cool as well but everyone would expect it and there’s something charming about the idea of keeping the six that made 90hp and building it into a beastly thing, or as beastly a thing as possible.

Are we nuts or is this little car damned cool?

As much as I hate to say it – anything as hideously out of proportion as this should be sent to the crusher on general principles. What were AMC thinking when they sawed at least three feet of a compact!

Far better to find a Pacer and make the same mods, at least then you will have a car that’s just plain fugly and not a vision of a designer’s warped madness…

It’s cool the way it is. I remember test driving an “X” and it was a really fun car to drive. Cool car….

  3. Matt Cramer

I’d put the original six in storage, swap in an injected Jeep 4.0, and make it my everyday driver.

  4. BlueSkyDreamer

It should be easy to find clutch pedals for this – The only other thing I would change after the 4.0 swap would be a 5 spd behind the 6

low pro’s are a no go on a gremmy, these things beg for tin work and 18″ wide mickey t’s, blower or tunnel ram for the win..

Neat car, low production & low survival rate, I `ve only seen one other and if you want one it`ll be a long while before you see another. That said, I see a dozen issues in the photos that make me question the 18K miles and that it`s ‘all original’.

I love AMC stuff, but haven’t ever seen one of these.

I’d leave it stock, just because of the rarity. If interested in a built gremlin, I would build a basic one with no historical interest.
