I have made no secret of my opinion regarding Ford Thunderbirds over the years. I have said mean things. I have intimated that parking spaces next to the Titanic are available, and I have generally been negative on the subject…until now. This car may be an exception to my well established rules but boy what an exception it is! This 1960 “Squarebird” is being built along a vintage NASCAR vibe and uses all sorts of good modern pieces because the owner wanted to hit Power Tour, cruise Route 66, and even run the Sand Hills Open Road Race with it as well. The boys from Holley sent us this link from their blog and told us to check it out. I’m kind of in love and normally I am anything but with these cars.
Ford lovers will be happy to know that it stays a true Ford from front to back. The engine is a warmed up 351 that makes 400hp with a roller cam, 10:1 compression, and Holley Terminator EFI. The suspension is all RideTech from front to back and that includes coil over shocks, a four link out back, and Wilwood brakes on the corners.
We’re not going to give it all away here. The guys at Level 7 Motorsports are building the car and provided awesome photos. You can see a couple photos below with the rest of the photos and info on the car at the link. Check this thing out, it rules and that is quite literally the first time I have ever said that about a Thunderbird made after 1957. This car is making me question everything about my life….
Just look at the side of that vehicle, fantastic.
There´s even room for a race number behind the wheel opening and door !!
Love it.
Jesse Vaughn is the man behind that build, he has some other great builds going on as well. I met him a couple years ago at the Power Tour stop in Dallas where at the time he was driving his freshly finished LS powered 240sx which caught the eyes of Optima batteries and he was invited to Las Vegas to show his car at SEMA and then compete in the Optima Challenge.
somebody has to discuss the irony here. Bruab hates Thunderbirds, UNLESS they are on jackstands and have only one wheel which coincidentally doesn’t have a tire on it.
Hmmm.
You have seen through my ruse!
Very cool. Wish it had an FE motor, but it’s understandable why it doesn’t. I always thought that the later Bullet Birds would look awesome in NASCAR trim. Seems like they’d have been pretty slippery too.
