Video: This Rally Car Launches Off A Cliff, Rolls A Billion Times, And Everyone Lives

Today we have a some footage of the nuttiest World Rally Challenge crash we have ever seen. Shot in 2009, this video features driver Jari-Matti Latvala hard at work at the tiller of the WRC car he was racing. Careening down the course near top speed, Latvala misjudges a corner, which turns out to be a jump and rolls the car over a cliff…literally. Once past the feeble little guardrail, the car goes into s sickening series of rolls and flips all the way down the hillside.

The wreck is caught from a couple of different angles but it happened in such a tough, remote spot the compelling footage comes from the camera mounted on the car which takes an amazing amount of footage before dying and a guy shooting with a shoulder mount camera who was in position to capture the whole chain of events from the moment the car leapt over the rail to the sickening rolls down the hill.

There’s an interview with an amazingly composed Latvala after the incident and he seems to just shrug the whole thing off. We guess when this stuff is your line of work, you have little to no other choice but to walk away from it and let it be known that you’d do a better job next time. If anyone wants to doubt the safety of WRC cars, let them watch this video to see how well this one in particular held up.
