(By Tom Lohnes) – Well, that sounds awesome. The next-generation of Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 has been spotted, and definitely heard, at full throttle. Ferrari beware.
Utilizing a 5.5-liter Naturally Aspirated Flat-Plane-crank V8 as its sole powertrain, the C8 ZO6 has a confirmed 9,000-RPM redline and a rumored 617 horsepower, which is extremely impressive for an atmospheric engine. With the engine mounted in the middle, the ZO6 has a super-short exhaust system that leads to this unique sound. We haven’t heard it at redline yet, because the person driving was short-shifting, but hearing the lower-RPM bellow of this motor leading up to the midrange shriek was a treat. According to the video published on Car and Driver’s YouTube channel, this engine sounds mighty similar to the Ferrari 458, and no one is complaining.
Rumor also says that the ZO6 will start around $80,000, which is a bargain any way you look at it. It’ll turn the impressive and already capable Stingray into a screaming, 9,000-RPM monster which is a more than fit rival to Porsche or Ferrari. The crazy part is, this is only the ZO6. There are at least 3 more versions of the C8 to come, all of which have increased amounts of insanity over the ZO6. Oh, what a time to be alive.
