One of the undeniable facts about road racing is that balance and talent are two of the most important elements in a successful effort. You can have a car that hammers the straights like Thor but when it comes to the corners it moves like a dump truck. That will allow the cars that are not so great on the straights to eat you alive. You can also have a damned good car that is piloted by someone who could not drive a nail. The good news is that this video highlights the opposite of those situations. We are riding in a Porsche 911 RSR piloted by BangShift’s adopted road racing hero Jim Pace. He’s battling a field of cars powered by V8s with his flat sixer Porsche and as you’ll see, he has a good drive for himself.
This video was taken during The Hawk International Challenge at Road America back in July. This is one of the biggest vintage races in the country with more than 400 cars from multiple classes and categories of road racing. We love the fact that Pace is clearly not in the most powerful car in the field but is in one that can hang with these thundering elephants. These 911 RSR Porsches are capable of eating drivers up because they lack all the niceties of modern Porsches. There is nothing to save you from snap oversteer or any of the other characteristics that earned these old Porsches the reputation for eliminating doctors and rich guys who tried to drive them at 10/10ths.
This is a great hunk of driving action and it sure is fun to see someone who knows what he is doing really get after it in a classic piece of iron like this!
