(By Eric Rood) – The Australians sure know how to build road courses. While Bathurst and Adelaide get all the glory internationally, Phillip Island Circuit might produce as good as those legendary tracks, particularly on motorcycles. This year, Phillip Island hosted the season opener of the World Superbike Championship and the season’s very first race saw a final-corner pass for the ages.
Defending world SBK champion Jonathan Rea led much of the race on his Yamaha until 2015’s championship runner-up Chaz Davies snuck his Ducati past Rea on the next-to-last corner. Unintimidated, Rea pulled off a brilliant crossover move that would have brought a tear to any dirt-oval racer’s eye. He was able to get on-throttle sooner and simply rode around Davies on the outside of the long final curve, clearing the Ducati’s front wheels by mere inches on the way to a 0.063-second victory.
Rea followed up the first-race win with a decisive victory in the weekend’s second race, giving him a solid start toward defending his 2015 championship.
Rea is riding a Kawasaki, not a Yamaha.
