We Drive It: The 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport – The Toyota-Subaru Share That’s More One Than The Other

Collaborations are more and more populous in the automotive world as time marches on. Companies realizing that combining forces on cars makes more sense than shouldering all the burden and risk alone. This is not a new thing. Think of the Ford/Mazda days with the Explorer and Navajo, the Ford Probe and the MX-6, and on and on. Heck, Chevrolet and Toyota teamed up years ago, so none of this is new and while many times this works swimmingly for both companies and a largely uninformed consumer base, in this case, we found the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport to come up short in some Subaru areas that it would excel at as a Toyota. The model we tested was reliable, had no mechanical issues or trouble over the course of the week we had it and drove it, and as you’ll see below, we developed some legit opinions on the car by the time we turned it back in.

Had we not driven the Trailseeker a couple of weeks prior to receiving this 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport, our opinions may actually be different but in the simplest terms, the Uncharted felt like the Trailseeker’s aspirational but not quite there yet younger brother in most aspects. It was smaller, it did not ride as well as the larger and heavier ‘Seeker, and the overall experience was just kind of lesser than that of what we had enjoyed with the Trailseeker. That does not include the party that awaits when you hammer the “gas”, this is an EV after all. This thing is fast. 0-60 times in the mid to lower 4-second range depending on how grippy your local pavement is, 338 instantly available horsepower out of two electric motors and a truly breathtaking sensation.

Yes, as childish as you may want to believe it sounds, the raw acceleration of this car was our favorite part of it, far and away. In another era, maybe one 5-7 years ago, the styling would be pretty bold and really eye catching but in reality, there are a couple of things that kind of tame it down. The Trailseeker is a larger version of the same look and the number of small SUVs that have gone to this kind of creased and rounded sheetmetal is numerous anymore so the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport more fits the current style than makes more of its own.

The interior and driving experience is where this one went full Toyota for us. Interior layout was familiar and we give props to the designers for actually employing lighter colors inside which make the space look and feel more airy. With a  driver and passenger, you’d swear that instead of the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport you were in the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker but when you start adding people, the whole thing shrinks very quickly.

The dash layout is uniform across these “shared models” as is the square steering wheel, dual inductive phone chargers (a cool feature), and the driver/passenger buckets are ok but forgettable in terms of comfort and support. Don’t take that as a shot, it means they did their job and did so with total functionality.

The driving experience is one that is just a little on the numb side for us, outside the rapid acceleration, which is also handled in relative silence so that also kind of knocks some of the fun factor out of it. The relatively narrow and hard compound EV tires reduce the lateral grip available, the tea traction control is relatively unintrusive which we tested on a rainy day with some attempts at harder acceleration than the tires could handle and the control systems limited power, restored grip, and we were off.

The bottom line for us? The 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport is definitely something that kind of lands in the “transportation module” of the motoring world for us and that’s what the most massive swath of the population is looking for. If we were to be shopping this model, we’d shop the Toyota version instead and get impressions on that. Perhaps it’s our expectation of a Subaru experience, our previous positive results with the Trailseeker, or something else, but the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport just felt far more Toyota to us than Subaru. With 270+ miles of range, a decent amount of workable storage space, and tight but available space for five, this unit could be the answer to your commuter and everyday car needs, it’s just one that won’t keep you up at night with excitement about driving it the next day.
