This 1938 Diamond T Model 80 Is One Of The Coolest And Most Rare Pickups Ever – Beautiful Truck Looking For Big Money

Sometimes things just don’t work out. This is true in life and in business. Both Mack and Diamond T were ultra-successful makers of heavy duty trucks during the 1930s and both of them decided to venture into the pickup truck market to make more money on their good name. Both companies failed miserably on this front and it was for an interesting reason. They both built fantastic looking, over engineered, indestructible pieces that few could afford. The Mack Jr. was largely a badge engineering job but this truck, the Diamond T Model 80 was a clean sheet design in every sense of the word. Produced from 1936-1938, I’m not sure exactly how many were made but the numbers were miniscule. This is likely one of the last examples of the Model 80 ever built. Thinking that they needed an even tougher truck, the company rolled out the Model 201 late in 1938 and sold even fewer.

One of the things we love about this rig is the styling. The front chrome grill, the beautiful fenders, the low roof on the cab combining with the rather tall bedsides to give a factory chopped look, and the interior all scream quality. Essentially this was the pickup truck that the trucking company owner wanted. The engine is a flathead six cylinder Hercules backed by a manual transmission. This particular truck was restored a little more than a decade ago and it appears that it has not been driven much since. The paint appears flawless in all the photos, the interior looks as though it has never been used, and the chrome work is pure perfection. From the bumper to the grill to the headlight bezels and even the small stainless steel or chromed bolts holding the fenders to the bed are impeccable. Spectacular.

As you would expect, the seller is looking for large money here and while an opening bid of $32,500 is way rich for our blood, we’re thinking that it isn’t too far out of whack for a serious collector. If you are into old pickup trucks we bet having one of these would be like having a Tucker in your collection. The rarity, style, and beauty of this truck and the few other examples that exist in this form is timeless. A glorious failure for sure.
