This 1956 Powell Pickup Truck Is Insanely Rare And Built Off Of A 1941 Plymouth – Buy It!

We got tipped off to this Craigslist ad by our pal Brady who saw it an immediately forwarded it on to us like a good BangShifter would. See, when people see weird stuff on the internet, we have kind of become the go-to default address for someone to say, “Hey, you guys need to see this!” In the case of a vehicle as weirdly cool as the Powell, it becomes front page material. If you can believe it, you aren’t actually looking at a truck here. Nope, you are actually looking at a 1941 Plymouth. Impossible you say? This thing was built in ’56? You are right in arguing the constructed in ’56 part but wrong on the Plymouth part. Sure this thing was built in ’56 but it was built on a ’41 Plymouth chassis and running gear. Why? Because they were cheap and plentiful as all get out.

The body on the truck is interesting in that the nose cap is fiberglass while the rest of the body is steel. The bed and cab are a single piece, not two pieces like we typically see on most trucks. Various accent and trim pieces on the truck were taken from old Fords and other vehicles that could be readily found and stripped in junkyards, and the dashboard was typically a reworked 1950 Plymouth piece. Obviously this was a small volume operation and the Powell business plan of  constructing “new” vehicles out of what were essentially 15 year old junkers didn’t have long term legs.

This particular truck is a “loaded” model because it has the two tone interior as well as the diamond plate tailgate and bed surround. One of the coolest parts of the truck is the tube-like storage area that could have been located on either side of the rear of the truck. Intended to be used to store fishing poles, it looks like this one was made into a tool box or something over the years.

Awkward, geeky, and strange, we want three of the, RIGHT NOW.

I saw that truck on Power Tour last year. Of all my years of following Plymouth devotedly, it was the one and only Powell I’ve ever seen. I was aware of them from Jim Benjaminson’s book on Plymouth cars 1959 and older, but I’ve only ever seen one. Incredibly rare and pretty cool to boot!

That is a really cool piece of semi-obscure automotive history!
I loved seeing that flathead in all its glory filling the engine compartment.

I’ve heard of the Powell pickup and sen pictures of one but have never seen one in person. I’m not really into trucks but his one is cool.

Growing up one of my neighbors had one of these. He used as his daily driver. I went by the place recently hoping it was sitting around but sadly it was gone.

I have ridden in one of these the summer of 2000 or 2001. A friend in colorado springs owned it and I went with him to a mopar show which is qualified for becuase of the 41 plymouth running gear. It got alot of attention and was in a magazine at one time before that. All yellow, low mileage and all original paint except the tailgate. At the time he beleived it to be the only one this side of the rockies. I would bet he still owns it along with alot of other odd cars and trucks
