This 1968 Subaru Sambar Mini-Truck Is Little, Bright, And Really Cool!

Up until about a year ago, I had viewed the little Japanese Kei trucks with a jaundiced eye. They were just little weird things that did not seem to have any guts of any real purpose. Trucks are supposed to be big and rugged. Trucks are supposed to be powerful and unstoppable. Trucks are supposed to be freaking useful! Then I actually got into and drove a Kei truck and was blown away. They are little pack mules, automotive ants that are able to work with loads seemingly larger than their own bodyweight and they are designed to get the job done, especially in tight spaces. The USA is a big place and we do not have the claustrophobic sized streets that some countries have, therefore these little rigs are both physically and mentally foreign to us. How about a classic one?

This is a 1968 Subaru Sambar, a rig that I never knew existed before seeing this RacingJunk.com ad for it. Painted a retina searing shade of yellow, the little trucks looks pretty radical! This thing has suicide doors, it has seating for two, a manual transmission, and an upright two-cylinder engine that looks like it was removed from a lawn tractor and stuck in the back of the truck.

This truck has been parked in a private collection for 10 years so it may need a little love here and there but the thing is in pristine shape. Whether you want to cruise the mighty mite or you want to use it to tow your race car to the lanes or make beer runs from the track, there are a million little jobs this Sambar would rule at.

If one is suicidal, this is likely a great choice of vehicle. Kind of like an asian Cushman Truckster made cheaply.

Sure, I wouldn’t want to drive this thing daily – but it would make an AWESOME pit vehicle if I had a big fancy racing operation.
