Would You Spend $60,000 For A Non-Running Engine, Even If It Is Kind Of Awesome?

Would You Spend $60,000 For A Non-Running Engine, Even If It Is Kind Of Awesome?

So pretty much everyone that reads BangShift has some sort of a non-running engine or vehicle laying around. Sometimes multiple. That’s a fact of the matter for many car and truck enthusiasts who chip away at their projects when they have the time. They invest their money when they can, their sweat when they can, and ultimately they end up with something cool. Typically the process does not start with a $60,000 purchase for a non-running engine but the dude selling this one sure thinks that it is with that. We’e dying to know. If you had the money would you spend $60,000 for a non-running engine, even if it was kind of awesome as in a 1932 Cadillac V12?!

This is not some basket case engine, instead it is complete and on a stand for museum style display. The seller bought it in in 1995 at an auction and has likely barely looked at it since then. There are loads of guys around the country who know these old engines well so if there happened to be a big buck restoration of a 1932-33 Caddy ongoing and it lacks the proper power plant, this thing could be the jam! Of course if you have the money to be into a 1930s Cadillac resto, the chances are that you have the 60-large to drop for this complete but dormant engine.

The photos of the mill are halfway decent but despite their non-pro quality you can really see the sheer bad ass nature of this engine. The 12 and 16 cylinder Cadillacs were among the finest cars in the world and as the Great Depression was sinking its teeth and claws into America and the world, engines like this would not be that long for production because people could simply not afford them.

This is a baller engine that deserves a baller car and obviously someone with baller cash to buy it!

That engine is not worth $60K. He is a dreamer. I have a 1930 Caddy V-16 on a stand. The V-16 is worth far more than a V-12, and it is no where near that kind of money.

Entire cars sell for 1.1 million – so, though it seems a lot, there’s a business case that could be made for it.

You know what they say – a fool and his money are easily parted. But I doubt anybody would be so stupid!

I’d go round to this guy’s house with a scruffy oil belching truck and say “Give me $20 and I’ll take it away for scrap”..

It is the first engine with design input from an automotive stylist, that is why they are so attractive. THe auction engine is missing the valley cover, which was part of the styling package.

They are rare and valuable, and beyond cool. And it is very complete, with some rare parts, and a transmission. I’d say 20,000 is fair market value. The 1 million+ dollar cars are V16, with a very rare and desirable Fleetwood roadster body. Not your average v12 cad.
