Joe Jones’ 1978 Crew Cab Dually SHORTBED, Is A Thing Of Beauty And Can Be Yours…If The Price Is Right.

It is no secret that we love all things dually around here. Standard cabs, crew cabs, extended cabs, super cabs, long beds, short beds, you name it. And we are also quick to criticize one that has jumped the shark and is no longer nearly as cool as it was when Chevrolet or Ford or Dodge built it. This is NOT one of those times. This is Joe Jones’ ultra bitchin 1978 Crew Cab Dually that he built as a short bed. And we approve. Back in the 1970s, 1980s, and even in the 1990’s, you couldn’t get a crew cab short bed pickup except for a couple rare examples. And those are harder than hell to find. But not being able to find an original, or having no original existing in the first place, is no reason not to have one now. Enter Joe Jones.

His truck has been shortened, is painted perfectly, and features enough custom features to be cool and comfortable but not so many as to feel like something the General wouldn’t have put together himself. The proportions actually work, the bed is a thing of beauty, and the fuel tank is mounted out back and fills from the bed, meaning smooth sides for this dually. We dig it.

The color combo speaks to us as well, mainly because I grew up with a Suburban that was painted nearly identical to Joe’s truck.

And did we forget to mention it has an LS Swap going on? Yeah we did! Not only does it have great modern power and towing ability, but also overdrive that results in 17 mpg! That is a number unheard of in any square body Chevrolet dually delivered from the factory, regardless of engine choice.

It also has all the creature comforts, including power windows, locks, power captains chairs up front and in the rear with armrests to separate the kids!!!

We’ll let the photos speak for themselves, and hope that someone out there in BANGshift land can afford the $25,000 price tag on this one. It is well worth it and we’d own it if our budget would allow it. Man this thing is cool.

It looks kind of odd to me with the short wheel base. That must have affected the fuel tank(s) fitting. A 5.3 in not the engine for towing heavy loads either.
