We Drive It: The 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport – It’s A Truck In Design and Intention, But Is It One In The Real World?

Practicality is one of those completely real, important, and largely uncelebrated elements of selecting what vehicle to buy. The whole nature of being an enthusiast is that you can eschew some of those more bedrock parts of the decision making process for features, styling, or other things that excite your rather than satiate your pragmatic side. In the case of the 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport we can say that the practicality levels are off the charts, and we put them to the normal test of everyday life.

We’ll get pilloried for saying this but the reality of the situation is that 90% or more of the trucks you see bounding down the road today are not being used for anything other than commuting purposes. Those Rams, F-150s, Sierras, and Silverados are not all headed to a rock quarry, a construction site, or to hook up with a new landscaping trailer. No, they’re just doing the yeoman’s work of transportation, something that’s best done and viewed with an eye toward the practical.

If the driving factor in someone’s want to own a truck is purely image, then you can stop reading here because the 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport is not going to match the aforementioned traditional American half and three quarter ton rigs on that image. What it is going to do, however is run circles around them in areas where both the Ridgeline and those other trucks are actually used the most. Things like fuel economy, driving dynamics, ease of use, and others. This is not a rig that comes with built in steps in the bumpers, a tailgate that transforms into a ladder to get into the bed, or other widgets of that nature because it does not need them, the Ridgeline is designed to be used by normal sized humans doing normal sized things.

Our Ridgeline Trailsport had a sticker price of just under $48,000 and while that is by no means bordering on free, it is by and large shockingly cheaper than the American trucks that you see all over the place, many of which don’t even start their sticker price (depending on trim package) below $60,000 and at that won’t deliver half the features and upgrades this 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport has.

The Trailsport package on the Ridgeline upgrades the tire selection to a more aggressive all-terrain set of rollers, upgrades the wheels, adds underbody protection, and does include a very mild tweaking of the suspension to be more “off road” capable. The Ridgeline is by no means in the realm of a Raptor, TRX, or other larger more aggressive off-road factory offering, but in our opinion, the Trailsport does give it enough of a visual pump to make it the far more preferred version of the vehicle as opposed to the other trim levels which are far more car like and genteel in appearance.

Many of the questions we got when we had our time with the 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport surrounded the bed and the kind of useful truck things that one could do with the little Honda. Here’s one example of our week. That is the 8.8″ Ford axle from the back end of my son’s Mercury Marauder that we were hauling off to have 4.10 gears installed in as well as a Detroit Tru-Trac differential. As you can see, with the tailgate down, it was an easy fit. The bed is good also in the fact that the sides are designed to be low so that you can easily reach over and either put items in the bed or remove them. As you can see the rear portion of the bed is also a trunk that opens to reveal all kinds of additional storage and stowage space that is protected from the elements.

The Ridgeline has a strongly beating heart under its hood. This 280hp 3.5L V6 is the same engine that was powering the previous generation Honda Pilot (which makes sense as the Ridgeline is built on the Pilot platform) and is hooked to a nine speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive system. The net result of that is a little truck that can go from 0-60 in right about six seconds flat which is not only quick, it’s downright fun. There are less and less “big” V-6 engines out there working the old school way, naturally aspirated but this is one of them and it’s a strong workhorse that gets with the program quickly. We’d not really want to press our luck with putting the Ridgeline to the task of working the maximum 5,000lb towing capacity, but for hauling things, people, and whatever’s in the bed around, there’s plenty of power here.

The interior of the 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport is well appointed. We liked the stitching details in the leather seats, the good blend of materials ranging from the workman-like rubber floors to the nicely leather covered seats. Headroom and leg room are perfectly acceptable for passengers of all build types in the back. Unlike cars which tend to have sloping roofs, the constant state of the Ridgeline’s means that taller passengers will not be contorting int he rear. If we had someone from the interior design department on the line we’d ask them for more bolstering in the front seats, but otherwise, comfort level was great. No, you do not haver the battleship commander viewing position in this truck that you get from a one ton, but you are also not sitting on the ground in a sports car either.

Honda design and practicality rule supreme when it comes to the driver’s area. Everything is simply and easily laid out to either look at, press, or activate. The radio, infotainment, HVAC, and even the shifting of gears are all done with easy to use buttons. The front seats have a plushness to them, which reminds you that you are actually in a “crossover” style truck. Yes, it feels a lot like a Honda Pilot in there (and for good reason like we told you) but in the end, it’s a great cockpit and one that fits the rest of the vehicle perfectly.

The driving dynamic of the Ridgeline blows every other pickup truck out of the water. It is quick and sprightly, not awkward and choppy on uneven roads. Its handling is crisp and direct, one of the reasons we’d love some more support in the seats up front. Dare we say that with the power, the acceleration, and the precision of the steering and suspension, this may be the most fun “truck” to zip around in on the market.

We give the 2026 Honda Ridgeline Trailsport two big BangShift thumbs up and recommend to anyone who is shopping a half ton truck that will absolutely and almost exclusively be using it to commute to work and haul your kids around, to check out the Ridgeline Trailsport. It does all the things most “regular” truck buyers need and does them more efficiently, has more panache, performance, and enthusiast driving touches than any other truck of larger size. Who says you can’t be practical and fun, right?
