If I Build Another OBS 4×4 Truck, I’m Gonna Solid Axle Swap It Like This

If I Build Another OBS 4×4 Truck, I’m Gonna Solid Axle Swap It Like This

I’ve owned lifted OBS Chevy trucks before and can tell you that the steering joints, factory suspension joints and just about everything else get seriously pissed off if you really start beating on them. Hell, the big tires are hard on some of that stuff if all you do is drive them on the street. Anything larger than a 35 inch tall tire starts to wreak havoc on them and that’s why anyone hard core has dreamed of, or performed a solid axle swap on these trucks. I remember well the first time that I saw a full install story on how to do your own solid axle swap on one, when Ned Bacon wrote about Project IFS No More in Four Wheeler Magazine, his 1989 K1500 that he swapped one ton axles into with leaf springs. It flexed like a mother, had a nice ride, and was so much more durable than the old IFS had been. I was in heaven and wanted that for my truck. Bad. Real bad.

Fast forward a few years and companies like WFO started making bolt in and weld in kits at a variety of levels. Leaf spring, links, coil overs, you name it. There were tons of kits and all of them made the truck so much better off the highway. Of course they aren’t cheap, but man are they cool. If I get another OBS Chevy truck, that is 4-wheel drive, it’s getting a solid axle swap like this for sure. Watch the video as the team at WFO makes the install happen and takes this truck from weak and boring to bad ass.

My taste is in smaller lifts with big tires like they did on this GMC, but I have to say if this was mine I’d want to stuff a pair of 40 inch tires under it minimum. If that meant big cutout flares then so be it. I think having a truck like this again would be a riot.
