Videos like this make me happy. Why? Because they show someone who is truly capable, talented, and able to right the wrongs that sometimes happen with machines. In this case it is the repair of a large shaft used in some sort of industrial pumping program.
A bearing chewed up the shaft pretty good and rather than replace it with another massively expensive one, the decision was made to have it fixed. The method the machinist will use to fix this is spray welding and it’s fascinating.
Between the methodology of actually spray welding and all the prep before and after to make sure the work is done correctly and with the longest lasting positive effect, we love this video. Not a short watch, you can bust it into pieces if you want to. It’s not some droning boring thing, either. It’s long because the process and the execution of it has many steps and we get to see them all.
If you love technology, repair, talented people with the right tools, and fun gearhead stuff you should watch this. Legit educational entertainment!
I didn’t even know this could be done. An amazing repair!
Love that! Fixing shit the old school way..
Pretty cool welding technique, this guy executes it with ease, one of the best machinist I’ve seen,
We used metal spraying then machining on a lathe to repair damaged shafts in the 1980’s. Some were successful , some weren’t.
