Vertically Challenged: The Restoration Of This Upright Steam Engine Is Mr Hand Tool’s Most Ambitious Project

If there is one thing I truly love about the Hand Tool Rescue channel on YouTube it is that you can never possible have a clue as to what’s coming next. Will it be some apple peeler from the 1700s, maybe the creation of a long lost tool from the old patent drawings, or now, as we know from watching this video, we can add steam engine to the list. Yes, you read that right.

This is a small vertical style steam engine that likely dates from right around the turn of the 20th century and it would have been used for any number of things, none of which are terribly exciting. It’s effectively a little work engine that could have powered a small boat, it could have run small equipment, etc. Think of it like a modern portable power source in some regard.

This is a multi part deal and this first episode we see the teardown and the investigation of all the parts and pieces. We also see the early stages of the restoration. He’s got a lot of fabrication and work ahead of him to get this thing perfect. We know that he can.
