This is an amazing piece of history caught on film and an awesome look at the engines which powered mankind’s ultimate hot rod, the Saturn V rocket. If you can imagine it, the Saturn V used five engines that each made ONE MILLION pounds of thrust to get the party started and they were each called F-1. This film is a short look at the engines, the engineering, and the background of these engines which were among the most advanced engineering achievements humankind had ever completed to that point in history. Harnessing this much power for the good of the world was something no one had ever done before and it was not without risks.
These liquid propellant rocket engines may have some qualities that are very rudimentary as compared to today’s technology but understand that the concepts and execution were top-secret, bleeding edge stuff. Also remember that in the time frame they were made, the idea of a CNC mill was so crazy that even engineers couldn’t conceive of it. The parts and piece on this engine and the entire Saturn V were made by hand. The hands of the best machinists in the the world, but still by hand.
