Gearhead Video: The Restoration Of This Weirdly Awesome 100 Year Old Ball Shaped Electric Motor Rules

We all seemed to have loved the recent restoration video about the Maytag gas engine last week so it is only right that we follow it up with something even more interesting and different. The restoration of this weirdly awesome 100 year old ball shaped electric motor is something else! It was used on a “medical device” called a “Cologne Vibrator” and was effectively a power source for remote attachments. You can draw your own conclusions here but let’s get back to the facts. This little motor would hang from a hook and like the power unit of a Dremel Tool it would spin and then turn a cable or whatnot to power whatever was at the end.

The whole thing is freaking awesome. Simple as hell but really pretty wonderful in its design and execution. We’ve never seen anything like it and it really does seem to be a fun intersection of form and function. It does the work but it is also pretty neat to look at. The whole motor is pulled apart, cleaned, and made as good as new. Hand Tool Restoration is one of the neatest resto channels on YouTube because the stuff he messes around with is always cool. Whether it is bringing back an old chainsaw, the engine, or something like this, we’re enthralled.

Give this a watch, you will dig it.
