Big Daddy: This Detroit Diesel 16V-149T Is A 2,000hp Monster And It Could Be Yours

Big Daddy: This Detroit Diesel 16V-149T Is A 2,000hp Monster And It Could Be Yours

Sure the specs are a little daunting. The engine weighs about 11,000lbs, it takes between 45 and 50 gallons of oil to fill, but you only have to change it every 300 hours or so. This is a Detroit Diesel 16V-149T the (almost) top of the Detroit food chain. Yes, the company made a bigger engine, the 20V-149 but that one is just ridiculous so we’re trying to keep it reasonable here. This engine is currently for sale on eBay and the seller claims it was used as part of some sort of test rig by the previous owner. With only 439 hours of run time, this big bertha isn’t even broken in yet.

For those of you playing at home, the 16V part means that this is a 16 cylinder engine set up in a V format and the 149 part means that it displaces 149ci per cylinder and the T part means turbocharged. Doing some quick math, the cubic inch displacement of this engine comes out to a completely monstrous 2,384. That is freaking awesome. Where the 20 cylinder variant of the mill was designed for haul trucks in mines and other huge operations, these 16-cylinder jobs were normally found as power generation units or other steady state types of roles.

Production started on these guys back in the 1960s and believe it or not they were made right up to the year 2000. That is a heck of a run! This engine uses two blocks, two cranks, two blowers (not producing boost, remember) and four turbochargers. They are also an overhead cam style layout as well. The engines are “square” in the sense that they use a 5.75″ bore and a 5.75″ stroke. We’ll show you this big guy that’s for sale today but tomorrow we’ll show you a couple of these monsters in action doing a couple of different jobs…including the fun work of destroying things and not just barrels of diesel fuel.

Big stuff FTW!
