No, we have not shown you ever swamp buggy racing video yet but we’re working on it. This video comes from the 1985 races and it is some of the best banter, joking, and loose television you’ll ever see. Ed Bruce, Brock Yates and Steve Evans are the three man booth for this one and by the time they came into the event in 1985, Yates and Evans already had a couple years of experience at these events so they knew the ins and outs. Bruce seems to be the odd man out on this one for most of the broadcast. The friendship of Yates and Evans and their knowledge along the ability to take this just seriously enough make this an awesome watch. Hell, it makes it an awesome listen as you can run this video in the background as you do actual work. Between jokes about driving cars into hotel swimming pools, “I remember when hotel owners used to have a sense of humor about stuff like that…” and stick their tongues firmly in cheek when talking about some of the stuff they are seeing, this is just about perfect. Nothing like this exists on TV anymore.
The other interesting thing is that this show is not called American Sports Cavalcade but rather “Super Sports America”. The music is the same and all of the other stuff about the show is the same so we’re guessing Super Sports America was a packaged show that Diamond P sold to other networks and channels to run outside of TNN. Up until we saw this video we never knew such a thing existed. Kind of interesting in a dorky kind of way, right?
This is a fun watch in every possible respect. The machines, the jokes, and the banter really make it. Hell, Yates kind of rips on a guy for the name of his buggy right to the dude’s face! Genius.
