Boosted Studes: These Two Studebaker Flatheads Are Different, Cool, and Love Forced Induction

Boosted Studes: These Two Studebaker Flatheads Are Different, Cool, and Love Forced Induction

Look, we know that neither of these engines make the kind of power that would impress most BangShifters but frankly we don’t care because they are two of the neatest little hot rodded engines we have seen in some time. This duo of Studebaker four cylinder flathead goodness together likely don’t make 300hp but if that’s your only measure of coolness, you have come to the wrong place. These are not store-bought combinations or kits. Anything you do with a 169ci or 190ci Stude four banger is its own unique project, especially if it involves the introduction of a turbocharger or a blower off of what looks like a GM V6. Fabricate an intake manifold to put the blower on, fabricate all the intake plumbing and exhaust plumbing for the turbo, etc. Hell, the turbo engine has a slide valve carb!

We find it interesting that both of these engines are in Studebaker trucks. It wold be neat to see the horsepower difference between bone stock and then with the addition of 9psi from the turbocharger. Huge? Likely not but as a % of the original power output we bet it is pretty big. There’s only so much you can do when the valve are in the block, right? The other comparison that wold be great to see would be to run both setups on the dyno and compare the power and torque curves. We’d expect the blower to be better down low…as blowers always are, and then the turbo to exert some dominance in the “upper” RPM reaches.

It ain’t all LS-engines out there, kids and these engines prove it. Creative and fun! Long live the hot rodders.

Check out these two cool engines below – boost and low horsepower are cool!
