Bottom Dollar Blazer Project – Episode 5: MY PARTS ARE HERE!

Bottom Dollar Blazer Project – Episode 5: MY PARTS ARE HERE!

OMG, Mr. Brownpants is here, Mr. Brownpants is here, and he has my parts! I’ve been waiting for this day, and it’s finally here! This is basically the shipment that’s going to turn this truck from a half-assed, near-rusted pile of junk into a really decent-looking rig.

UPS

The invoice for these parts was about $950, but in the interest of full disclosure, I did not pay for it. LMC Truck was cool enough to help out with the project, which is going to make the difference between getting this done now, and saving some money for a year and doing it then.

Legal Question: Since the parts were addressed to BangShift, do I have to turn the title for this thing over to Lohnes when it’s finished?

LMC

I still have about $1,000 worth of stuff to buy, including new bumpers, the driver’s door, which I’ve finally convinced myself needs to be replaced, a new carpet, insulation and a few other miscellaneous items. That stuff I’ll be writing a check for, but the help from LMC Truck is greatly appreciated.

I got two new front fenders, the replacement for the barely-there passenger door, essentially every soft rubber part for the entire truck except for the windshield gaskets, and a new channel for the back glass, which is barely holding on and is falling apart as we speak.

YardSale

No, I am not having a yard sale. To make all the work I’m doing a little easier to manage, I gutted the interior. I had hoped to save the carpet, but as I pulled it out, it started falling apart, so I’m going to buy a whole new carpet set.

Knife

If you built Chevy Blazers in 1979 at the Flint Plant, give me a call. I have your folding knife. In the process of taking the carpet out, I noticed a lump under the insulation. It turned out to be a rusty — but still usable — Old Timer Barlow pocket knife. I let it sit in transmission fluid and acetone overnight and cleaned it up. SCORE.

Floor

Let me tell you, this thing is LOUD on the road now with no insulation and carpet.

Meanwhile, back at the shop, I cut out rusty sheetmetal.

Cutoff

Gee, I have no idea why these rockers might have rusted so badly. Maybe it’s because THEY WERE NEVER PAINTED INSIDE.

Rocker

With a little cutting and finagling, the rockers fit great. They’re all welded up now. I’m going to take the door off to finish up the grinding at the front of the rocker, but I’ll be ready to smooth it out next week.

Rocker In

Last Week’s Total: $3,740.43
This Week’s Expenses: $30 in materials – cutoff wheels, grinding discs

Grand Total So Far: $3770.43
