The rise of what we now call “Mega Trucks” has been pretty interesting. These things began as cobbled together rigs that were stiffer than a school bus and about as interesting to watch. They have evolved into rigs that have the capabilities of modern monster trucks with the classic looks of the old ones (especially those that ran tall and skinny tractor tires). This video shows them competing in an interesting style race that we’d definitely pay a ticket to watch. This isn’t about fording mud ponds, jumps, or rolling over, this is about speed…with a catch. That catch just happens to be a massive tire that would normally be found on a front end loader or another piece of big equipment. Said tire is chained to the back of the truck and they have to get themselves from a standing stop to the finish line, drag race style as quickly as possible. They run these as single runs for obvious reasons. Now, we’re not sure if this is a contest of simply time or if top speed is being considered. Either way we love it.
You’ll notice that some of the trucks don’t seem to struggle with the tire at all and then others are clearly working up a sweat trying to lug themselves and the tire down the course. Of the more entertaining things you will see are mud bog racer style trucks giving it a shot. We’re talking about much smaller and lighter rigs than the big Bronco you see below. Those guys blaze the tires before they chew hard enough to get moving. Weight is a help in some situations it seems!
This video’s best quality is probably the sound. Crank your speakers to 11 and listen to this big engines work. Some are blown, some are on nitrous, and at least one of them is turbocharged. You’ll also be able to tell which trucks have big cubes and which ones need bigger cubes. This is a great and fun watch!
